Rather it's an embellishment of all the trends Wells saw taking place in the 19th century. The characters are lacking in any charisma or personality (and this is my main gripe with most of Wells' fiction) The good guys aren't likable and the bad guys aren't despicable, so it's hard to get invested in the drama.
